Throughout the gardening season, The New York Botanical Garden will present The Edible Garden, an exhibition about growing and preparing good food. Burpee Home Gardens is a supporting sponsor of The Edible Garden, and Burpee vegetable plants will be used for hands-on youth program “Flowers to Fruits”, which takes place in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.
"Economic, nutritional, environmental and social interests are converging to elevate the practice of home vegetable gardening to mainstream relevance," said Jessie Atchison, brand manager for Burpee Home Gardens at the kick-off press event June 16. "At Burpee Home Gardens, our goal is to help a new generation of gardeners discover the enjoyment of growing and preparing vegetables and herbs at home. With help from partners like the New York Botanical Garden and exhibits like The Edible Garden, we can encourage gardeners of all ages to better themselves, their lives, and their communities."
Set across the 250-acre NYBG landscape from June 19 through October 17, 2010, The Edible Garden will feature a multitude of vegetable and herb gardens as well as live food demonstrations daily. During four festival weekends, culinary and gardening experts will be on-hand, such as Mario Batali, Rick Bayless, Lidia Bastianich, Sara Moulton, Daisy Martinez, Dan Barber, and others, to demonstrate the bounty, economy and nutritional value of edible plants.
In addition, The Edible Garden will teach visitors how to grow the best food at home: Celebrity chefs will narrate audio garden tours, through which visitors can discover where their food comes from and how it gets to their table. Proceeds from the event benefit the NYBG Children’s Gardening Program, which educates children and lets them plant, tend and harvest fruits, vegetables and herbs all season long.
Burpee Home Garden plants are also on sale at the NYBG 'Shop in the Garden', where visitors can find books for both cooks and gardeners, unique plants, and botanically-inspired goods.
