Mid-season weeding tips

Getting a handle on rampant weeds is very important for a healthy garden. Weeds not only choke out your colorful plants or vegetables from much-needed sun and hydration, but they could be a breeding ground for pests and disease.

This week we're sharing some ideas on how to keep weeds from overpowering your garden space:

  • The best time to weed is when the soil is moist, like after it's rained or on a dewy morning. Weeds should pull right out without disturbing the soil. Hold the weed near its roots and pull gently so you don't break it off at the surface of the soil. Unless you get the roots, it'll be back in a few days.

  • Weed often, so you catch them when they’re tiny. They’re much easier to pull and will take a lot less of your time. You’ll also have a healthier garden bed!

  • Maintain control of the weeds by using a hand rake on the soil. You’ll easily dislodge young weed roots and expose them to the air, where they’ll die. Just be careful not to disturb the plants you like!

  • Use good quality mulch in your garden beds. You’ll still get some weeds, but mulch will definitely save you time while you pull, and it will keep your garden looking neat.
