DIY small space herb garden
Abbie Clark  Burpee Marketing

"What can I grow with limited space and a limited budget?" This was the question I asked myself earlier this spring while trying to decide which plants to grow on my apartment balcony.

The second thing that popped into my mind: "What am I going to do with a garden?"

After talking with friends and coworkers, I settled on the idea of planting an herb garden. As a beginning gardener, I wanted plants that would not only add a pop of color to my porch, but also contribute to other areas of my life, like cooking and entertaining. Herbs just happened to fit this description!

For my garden, I decided to use a wooden window box and five different herbs from Burpee Plants: lemon balm, basil, rosemary, sage and sweet marjoram.

After filling my container about 3/4 of the way with soil, I took the plants out of their pots and arranged them in the box in a way that best fit my vision for how I wanted my container to look. When planting, make sure to give the plants enough room to grow! I staggered mine in a zig-zag pattern to give each plant as much space as possible. Spacing information can be found on the plant tag or at BurpeeHomeGardens.com.

Once the plants were in position, I simply filled in the empty gaps between each plant with soil and watered the container. I also added a pinch of slow-release fertilizer to each plant. (I'll continue to do this once every two weeks.) I'll be clipping leaves and springs often for my recipes and other projects, and this will help keep them shaped the way I want, plus it will encourage more growth!

After seeing how simple it was to plant my own herb garden, I cannot wait to watch my plants grow and repeat this project again next year. As for now, I plan on finding any excuse to use my new Burpee herbs wherever I can!

I've never done this before, but would love to try.
May I ask what kind of soil I should buy?
Sorry, no planting knowledge here, whatsoever.

I'd appreciate any help/advice!
Thank you.

Regards,
Kristi
