Gardeners embrace technology

When you grow your vegetable garden, the inevitable happens: You brag. Yes, its in our human nature to want to share our accomplishments, either by foisting excess produce on our family and friends, or sharing gardening tricks over the fence with neighbors. We like to talk about our gardens, and we like to hear about others’.

It used to be that you were limited by your shouting distance for who could hear your joys and your sorrows. But with social media, grassroots blog sites and mobile texts, you can let the world know all about how you grow.

Hurray for the internet!

We at Burpee Home Gardens have embraced it. We love sharing helpful links, meeting avid gardeners nationwide, and fielding questions and feedback. This year we’re proud to support the “Growing A Greener World” crew once again, and they’ve had a blast meeting folks face-to-face, as well as at their Facebook page. (That's their logo pictured above. Isn't it a great way to represent this new blending of "green" and techie pursuits?)

If you want to pick the brains of GGW hosts, catch them on Twitter during #gardenchat this Monday, February 7, at 9:00 pm EST (8:00 pm CST). They’ll be chatting live, answering your questions and sharing down-in-the-dirt details of their popular TV series. (Burpee Home Gardens will be tuning in, too! And we’ll be giving away 100 “Garden Fresh” vegetable gardening guides.)

Getting back to technology, besides our website, blog and social sites, Burpee Home Gardens was really stoked to get into mobile tools, too. So many of us live through our cell phones – we’re always on the go! To reach gardeners in the ways easy for them, we introduce the Burpee Garden Coach™!

Burpee Garden Coach is a mobile way to receive texted gardening reminders and local weather forecasts. It also gives you complete mobile access to Burpee vegetable and herbs, as well as a way to create your own online garden journal. You can learn more about Burpee Garden Coach through our video. But to really see how the Coach can help you, sign up by texting your zip or postal code to 80998 (message and data rates may apply).

How do you use technology in the garden? Do you post Flickr™ albums of your bumper crops? Organize a harvest event through Facebook? Answer (and ask) questions at your favorite extension forum? We want to hear all about it!
