If your shopping list is complete and you’ve chosen which varieties you’d like to grow in your garden, the next step is determining how many of each plant you’ll need to meet your harvest goals.

Like selecting varieties, quantity is based on personal preference and need. But we’ve developed some guidelines to get help you started.

Some rules of thumb to feed two to three people:

Tomatoes: 3-4 plants of several varieties
Cucumbers: 1-3 plants
Cauliflower, Broccoli: 2-4 plants
Lettuce, Spinach: 2-4 ft. row
Carrots, Radish: 2-4 ft. row
Bush Beans: 4 ft. row
Pole Beans: 3 plants for each pole
Peppers: 1-2 plants for each of 3-4 varieties
Squash, Zucchini: 2-4 plants total
Melons, Pumpkins: 1 plant per variety

We've added dozens of new varieties to our list of vegetables and herbs! Be sure to check out our complete lineup here. And to find a local garden center selling Burpee Home Gardens, enter your zip code here.
