Flint, Michigan is a city in transition, making this an important stop for the Burpee truck and the “Grow Anywhere Tour.” Our destination was Durant Tuuri Mott Elementary, the winner of our Michigan Facebook vote-off this year.
When we rolled in, we were so encouraged! Dennis Lackey from Food Corps and his crew from the Crim Fitness Foundation had pulled together an amazing event! They truly have great hearts for the Flint community, and you could see the impact they were making there as they laughed and shared with families that had grown to know them.
This stop on the tour featured other organizations as well, showing off different ways to live a healthy lifestyle. Groups demonstrating the importance of fitness, knowing where you food comes from, and how to grow your own food in a trailer behind your truck all were present.
There was such a great sense of camaraderie and shared beliefs among all of the exhibitors. Plus the volunteers were so helpful as well, despite the plunging temperature. What a spring! We could have sworn that as the event drew closer the plants seemed to hug each other for warmth.
We could go on forever describing all the enthusiasm we felt from the Durant Tuuri Mott community! We are excited to hear more about what Crim Fitness Foundation and FoodCorps will accomplish in the following years in the Flint area. Hopefully we will get a chance to stop by sometime again in the near future.
Until next time, we wish you all a grand beginning to the growing season.
