Herbs as cut flowers

This past weekend I picked up some Burpee herbs from my local garden center to add to my cut flower garden. That's right! There are many herbs that make great additions to your garden bouquets. Some of them have attractive flowers, and their foliage makes a unique and long-lasting filler. In fact, the stems from this Burpee Peppermint have lasted for about three rotations of spring flowers on my dining room table! This week it is paired with hyacinths.

The steps to keeping your herbs fresh and perky in the vase are the same as how you would care for any other flowers you're snipping to bring into the house:

  • Cut early in the morning or later in the evening, or whenever the sun is not beating down
  • Cut stems at an angle for maximum water absorption
  • Change water daily

Here are a few of my favorite herbs that I am growing this year to fill both my flower vases — and my belly:
   Rosemary
   Sage
   Parsley
   Dill
   Oregano
   Lavender
   Mint
   Parsley
   Chives
