What do we do now?
Hallie Moore  Guest Blogger 2010

Being the novice gardeners that we are, we are a little lost. We ended up being great at the planting part (but really how hard can that be?). We also have been pretty good at the watering and surveying of our veggies. But, now that they are big and growing and producing … what do we do now?

Our biggest question is when and how to harvest what we have grown. We also had to learn the hard way that our tomatoes need support. We added cages to our ever-growing and expanding tomato plants to give them some much-needed help in staying upright.

Our tomatoes and peppers are nearing time to harvest, or so we think. We are anxious to pluck them from the vine so we can proudly hold our hard work in our hands and conjure up some recipes to use them in. We also are nervous we will pick them too early. I have been Googling and looking through the Burpee Home Gardens site to find more information, but we are still nervous. It’s like sending your kids off to school for the very first time … excited and scared all at once!

Another question we have is what do we do after we have harvested those veggies? Do we cut back the plant to prompt more growth? Do we leave it alone? Ahh … so many questions for us newbies!

In the meantime, we are enjoying the fruits (er, veggies) of our labor. It has been very exciting watching the garden take off. The best part is coming home from work everyday and heading over to survey the latest growth. I almost feel like I have a green thumb! Or at least a yellowish-green.

So, what do we do now? I guess we research and then eventually just give caution to the wind and harvest our products!

If you have any suggestions or helpful tips for Hallie, post them below!

Peppers and their color always throws me -- green to red, when?! Some ripen off the vine, but most can be harvested and eaten as soon as they reach full size.
