A little pizzazz never hurts

The hockey garden is doing far better than I ever expected. But it was missing something. What could really set it apart from other gardens?

After a short family meeting, my youngest son (Greyden) said something about jerseys. Light bulb flash!

When the plants arrived, they had plain labels to identify each plant. I stuck those in the ground and went on with life. That was until my little genius gave me an idea. What if we made jersey-shaped plant labels?

Nothing says "Team" like matching jerseys. My wife and kids cut out red and white foam jerseys and glued them to Popsicle sticks — eating the popsicles was half the fun. :) What do you think?

By the way, I was struggling for team names. I wanted something clever, fun and easy to remember. The plants went nameless until they got their jerseys — Team Fuego Fury (red) and Team Polarpalooza (white).

My father-in-law has a garden with 10-12 tomato plants. And they're monsters, standing about 5 ft. tall. They tower over my squatty 2-ft. tomato plants. I was concerned I was doing something wrong — that wouldn’t be the first time, nor the last. But then I noticed my plants were full of tomatoes. I mean plump, ready-to-ripe tomatoes. He had none. Hmmm?

It begged the question: Does the height of the plant matter? I’ll let you experts think about that. All I know is that I had tomatoes and my father-in-law didn’t. I win!
