Kid Power, Inc.  2011 "I Can Grow" Youth Garden Award Winner

October was a month of realization for our team of Kid Power Jr. Gardeners. After a full month of Veggie Time Lessons, our students have learned what 5 things plants need, how to properly water a garden, the properties of good soil, and how to identify 5 new vegetables and the plants they grow from.

Our afternoons in the gardens have been amazing. I never thought I would hear myself say, “Please let me wash that carrot before you eat it!” Students who professed to only like corn are now eating green beans off the vine, carrots out of the ground and enjoying tasting the wonderful greens they have grown themselves.

As we gear up for our final farmers market of the season and our big Thanksgiving dinner, the kids are sad to see the effects of fall on the garden. Our tomato plants have been removed and the basil was wiped out in a first early frost, but the kids are already looking forward to spring and planning out what they want to grow next season. ~ Katie Harvey, Veggie Time Director, Kid Power Inc.
