‘Grow Anywhere Tour’ heads to sunny California
Burpee  Edible Gardening Team Members

The Los Angeles stop on the Burpee Home Gardens “Grow Anywhere Tour” was a huge success! First on Monday we visited Armstrong Gardens in Pasadena, California, and the customers there were super-friendly. They asked some really great questions and we did our best to provide them answers. Lots of people were really interested in our delicious new line of Bumper Crop grafted heirloom tomatoes. And the BOOST collection of antioxidant vegetables was another they were excited about.

This idea of getting children more antioxidants and better-tasting tomatoes was a huge hit at Tierra Bonita Elementary School in Lancaster, California, where the #BurpeeTruck rolled in to hand out free plants and fresh produce. The families, staff and community leaders all seemed eager to get their hands on these great plants. After a warm welcome and introduction by a local pastor about changing children’s lives through healthy eating and growing their own food, we got to work!

The veggie plants from Armstrong Growers (Glendora, California) were some of the healthiest plants we had ever seen. The people at Tierra Bonita thought so, too. It seemed everyone went away with a smile on their face and ready to put their plants into the ground. Hearing the stories about how so many of the families were working hard to ensure the health of their children was encouraging. Getting the chance to help families put more food on their table by growing it themselves left us feeling inspired.

We know that this visit is only the beginning for these children because they have great leaders who are guiding them into healthier lifestyles in the future. Kerrie Kirkbride, the leader of the “Baby Carrots” at Tierra Bonita, showed us how one person, with the help of a few others, can make a huge difference in children’s lives. Our biggest regret is not having more time to spend with them, but we will make sure to keep in touch with the school so that we have a lasting impact!

Thanks for checking in with us today! We hope that this blog entry leaves you inspired to go out and make a difference. Go out and get your own community interested in gardening, and maybe their excitement will rub off on others. Remember, the children are the future, and we see greatness ready to spring forth from them!
