Gifts from the garden
Abbie Clark  Burpee Marketing

Nothing screams "summertime" quite like a party by the pool. But when it comes to thanking the party hostess, I have a difficult time finding useful, inexpensive gifts to give friends and family as a token of my gratitude. After planting my Burpee herb garden this year, I made it my mission to find a way to incorporate those herbs into something to share.

So what did I come up with? Herbal sugar scrubs!

Not only are these scrubs incredibly simple and easy to make, they are a wonderful gift. Also, they allow me to keep my Burpee herb plants looking healthy and well-maintained as they continue to grow.

Here are three recipes I used to make my own herb sugar scrubs:

Rosemary Lemon Sugar Scrub
Ingredients:
4-5 sprigs of Burpee Rosemary
the zest and juice of ½ a lemon
1 cup of granulated sugar
1 teaspoon coconut oil
To prepare the Rosemary, remove the leaves from the stem by stripping the branch with your fingers from one end to the other. I chopped up the leaves a tiny bit before adding them to the mixing bowl to release more of the scent from the herb. To make this scrub, simply add all the ingredients into a medium-sized mixing bowl and mix by hand until it is smooth.

Basil Lime Sugar Scrub
Ingredients:
5 large Burpee Basil leaves
the zest and juice of ½ a lime
1 cup of granulated sugar
1 teaspoon coconut oil
In this scrub, it is important to chop up the basil leaves before adding them to a mixing bowl. Not only will this release more of the fragrance from the leaves, but it will make sure there are no large-leaf pieces in the scrub. After chopping up the leaves into small pieces, add in the rest of the ingredients and mix away!

Mint Lime Sugar Scrub
Ingredients:
About 20 Burpee Mint leaves
the zest and juice of ½ a lime
1 cup of granulated sugar
1 teaspoon coconut oil
Just like before, it is important to chop up the mint leaves into smaller pieces before adding them into the mixing bowl. Once this is done, add in all of the other ingredients, mix and enjoy!

Each of these recipes makes enough to fill one 8oz. jar. These jars should be used within a few months and work best as full body scrubs. The coarseness of the sugar may be too abrasive for facial use.

These herb sugar scrubs are so easy and inexpensive to make, they make the perfect gifts for anyone on your list. Lucky for me, I can make them any time as my Burpee herbs continue to grow!
